I don’t know why I have not come across Laci Green before, but I will definitely be following her awesome sex education videos from now on. This week she has released a short video against Conversion Therapy; that is the kind of therapy that Leelah Alcorn’s parents made her undergo to try to “cure” her gender dysphoria. Its the same kind of therapy that has been promoted in the US for years to cure people who are gay. My parents took me to a child psychiatrist when I was about 6 years old because I didn’t get on with children of my own age – actually looking back it was because I didn’t mix with boys or want to engage in boys activities, but they didn’t get that this was a gender identity issue – fortunately. If they had, the treatment in the UK was conversion therapy although it was not called that then.
One of the main therapies used to cure gender and sexual orientation issues then (and now) was Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), formerly known as electroshock therapy. If you have ever watched Clockwork Orange – its the aversion therapy (another name for conversion therapy) they used in the film to cure Malcolm McDowell’s character Alex of his violent behaviour. Sadly this is still common therapy for certain mental health conditions and in the US it is one of the primary treatments to “cure” transgender and gay people. Watch Laci’s brilliant video – I know you will be shocked
Did you hear that – “Conversion therapy is pretty straightforward – it aims to convert homosexual people into straight, or transgender people into cisgender…” OK this is a new term for most people that is growing in use. If you think Homosexual/Heterosexual (I know she said straight but that means heterosexual) – now we have Transgender/Cisgender – The term has come about because m,any people think transgender or “normal” – which suggests that transgender is abnormal, and if its abnormal there must be a way to “fix” things so that we become normal. WRONG!!! Transgender or homosexual is just different to cisgender or heterosexual.
What has turned this young trans girl’s death into a viral issue more than anything else has been the revelation in Leelah’s suicide note that her parents sent her to christian only therapists who refused to accept her gender identity issues.
The response has been a petition in the US started by Transgender Human Rights Institute to bring an end to conversion therapy. Its been called Leelah’s Law and there is also an excellent Facebook page keeping us up to date with new on the progress of the petition and related content. Please take a moment if you have not already done to so sign the petition, if you are not from the US because if the US does respond positively to this it will impact the practices in many other countries as well.
